Summer ’22 @ Beacon!
A few summer break reminders!
WHO TO CONTACT:
• Beacon Assistant Principals Sarah Shams (sshams@beaconschool.org) and Naisha Baidy-Crews (ncrews@beaconschool.org) will be Beacon’s on-site administration over the summer.
• If you have Special Education questions, please email Ms. Crews and contact Ms. Shams with any other questions.
• Transcripts, report cards and diplomas (available with the signature of a graduated student or their parent/guardian) will be available in the main office after July 7, 2022. The office will be open from 9-1pm, Monday to Thursday. There is no need to email requests for these documents.
• If your student needs working papers for a summer or part-time job, please contact school secretary Ms. Raydale Blaylock (rblayloc@beaconschool.org).
• Beacon’s Parent Coordinator Ms. Erdene Greene (egreene@beaconschool.org) will be available from July 7-28th, 9am-2pm (weekdays except for Fridays) and then will be on vacation until Aug. 31st, when she will be back in the building and part of Summer Bridge for rising 9th grade students.
• The school office can be reached at (212) 465-4230 if you prefer to call.
• Feel free to reach out to the Beacon PTA at beaconpta@beaconschool.org if we can help too!
SUMMER SCHOOL
• Students who are expected to attend Summer School have been notified and are expected to report to school by 9am on July 5th. Summer school at Beacon takes place from July 5-Aug. 11, 9am-2pm (with no classes on Fridays).
SUMMER BRIDGE
• Rising 9th grade students are invited to attend Summer Bridge orientation sessions at Beacon on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1st.
• Students whose last names start with A-J come in August 31st from 10am-1pm.
• Students whose last names start with K-Z come in September 1st from 10am-1pm.
• Activities: Meet Guidance Staff and Advisors and Big Sibs and, most importantly, meet your classmates! Please note that Summer Bridge is for rising 9th grade students only, not families.
• Please fill out this Summer Bridge RSVP form by July 15th so we can plan for you at Summer Bridge and have your Beacon t-shirt ready!
SUMMER READING
• Here is Beacon’s Summer 2022 Reading assignment, featuring a range of material (such as Ta-Nehisi Coates’ The Case for Reparations) and other content to inspire students to explore their interests.
• Don’t miss the PTA DEI Committee’s summer reading list (including books for Beacon students curated by Lucy Yu, co-owner of Yu & Me Books).
• Students are expected to have (or apply for) a New York Public Library Card, not only for access to NYPL materials but also for access to texts and software like JSTOR throughout the year.
• Don’t miss NYPL’s summer programming for teens — and download the DOE’s Sora app to access e-books too!
SPORTS TRYOUTS & PRACTICES
• Click here for a list of tryouts and practices for students who are interested in playing on a varsity sports team at Beacon this fall. Some practices start in August—please check with the coaches to confirm dates and sign up. Each student will need to bring a completed and signed hard copy of the PSAL medical form and parental consent form… no forms, no tryout!
Have a safe & enjoyable summer break … and don’t forget September 8th is the first day of the new school year!
