All members of the Beacon school community, especially parents and guardians, are invited to attend this important presentation and discussion, presented by Beacon’s Guidance Counseling team:
The Fentanyl Crisis & Teens: Presentation and Q&A
Date: Tuesday, November 15th
Time: 5pm
Location: Beacon School auditorium (522 West 44th Street, New York, NY 10036)
Fentanyl is the #1 cause of death for people aged 18 to 45 in America – more than car accidents, more than illness, more than anything.
The presenter, Beth Weinstock M.D., is a poet and physician, but foremost a mother of four whose eldest son Eli was murdered in March of 2021 when he unintentionally ingested fentanyl. A graduate of the University of Michigan and the Ohio State University College of Medicine, she works at Equitas Health and cares for individuals infected with HIV and Hepatitis C. She teaches poetry workshops to medical students and veterans, and serves on several Humanities in Medicine committees. Weinstock and her husband Michael—also a physician—and their children Olivia, Theo, and Annie live in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by a loving community of friends and family who have helped them navigate this enormous tragedy and find strength from beautiful memories of their beloved Eli.
In honor of her beloved son who passed from unintentional fentanyl ingestion, Beth Weinstock M.D., and her daughter, Olivia, founded an educational initiative called BirdieLight to fight the catastrophic increase in fentanyl poisonings in young people. BirdieLight is committed to educating young people about the danger of unintentional fentanyl ingestion and empowering them with tools to detect fentanyl before they ingest it.
