MINUTES (Approved 1/10/22)
1. WELCOME
Shirley Brady, Robin Broshi & Nancy Molesworth, PTA Co-Presidents
2. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Brady Smith
- C-30 process is underway for AP position that Ms. Crews holds in an interim capacity. C-30 involves numerous constituencies. She is interim acting AP and is also interviewing for her current position.
- Mr. August left Beacon on good terms for an administrative position. He had been expressing interest in being involved in administration.
- Community Service for 10th graders: Goal is to have students reach out and find their own Community Service options. Required hours are reduced to 35 hours (like for 11th graders). CS is an important part of Beacon experience, a student-led experience that is meant to be part of the advisory curriculum. Mr. Jacobs, CS coordinator, will share more details in an information session with 10th grade families in January.
3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES

• Nov. 20, 2021 regular membership meeting minutes (click here) – Nancy Molesworth made a motion to approve minutes, Diana Mahiques seconded. APPROVED.
4. TREASURERS’ REPORT
Spencer Green, Katherine Bruck
- Naviance is now being paid for by DOE
- Budget shared by Spencer.
- December requests:
- Dance curtain request is $1700 down from $10K
- Substitute teacher for 9 days that DOE won’t pay for – $1793.
- Bean bag chairs request – not recommended by PTA EB.
- Erdene teacher for 21 hours – work done in summer
- Outdoor tables and chairs – parent went out and bought without PTA approval – not recommended for fudning by PTA EB.
- Anju Gupta made a motion to approve budget requests as recommended by EB. 2nd by Robin Broshi. APPROVED.
- Follow-up discussion re new Chancellor’s regs as to how money can come into PTA using Venmo and other apps. More info needed.
5. COMMITTEE REPORTS
- Fundraising: Karen Jolicoeur, Alison Overholser [live raffle draw]
- Farmer’s market delivered fund raiser – code for beacon to get referral fee
- Magic of Coby virtual event – February 2nd is a potential date, was a success last year. Mentalist, illusionist.
- Air book raffle drawn – 301 tickets sold – will make about $5000 which is what is allowed by DOE. Tovah Klein is winner,
- Merchandise: Diana Mahiques, Julie Harding
- Friday was the 4th merch sale – over $4600 raised – a success!
- February 11th is next merch date
- Buying merchandise online is more expensive than in person. Will go live soon.
- $18K in sales
- Community Building: Karen Stonely, Natasha Zaretsky
- Micro in person gatherings happening
- Virtual IEP meetings taking place through town halls.
- Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Gary Anthony Ramsay, Windell Williams
- Use of derogatory language in classes discussed with Brady. Teachers to provide context during instruction where there is triggering language being used. Suggestion to meet with BUU leadership team.
- School waiting for what admissions guidelines will look like for next year
- DEI subcommittees still need to meet.
- Next book club meeting is 12/14 at 6 pm. Continue reading of Minor Feelings.
- Glossary of terms to be socialized – figuring out how to bring before Beacon community
- Communications: Justine Keil – no report
- Hospitality: Jennifer Weisbord – no report
6. OTHER BUSINESS
- Budget Committee meeting – Thursday, 12/16 at 6pm
